For this month, we are featuring the band DEAREST, and their upcoming album launch on February 2oth! Get to know more about the band, the story behind their name, and what can we expect from their launch!

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE BAND’S NAME? WHY DOES IT ALWAYS HAVE THE COMMA?

We sat down one day and tried to list off all the band names we could think of. Miles suddenly had the idea to call it Dearest,. We debated for a while if the comma should be there or not but in the end we decided to keep it. The reason being “Dearest,” is something you write at the start of a letter and with each song being sort of a letter or a message that you want people to connect with, it seemed like an appropriate message.

Our short answer would usually be what you would write to someone you loved, you’d say “Dearest,”. It’s cheesy but it gets the message across. We get a lot of interpretations from other people too. One was by Garch of Heygarch who’s explanation was that in a letter, when it would be too painful to even say that person’s name, all you can write is “Dearest,” and then the rest of the letter. It’s interesting seeing people wonder why we add the comma there. Personally, I think it makes it more memorable that way.

ANY INTERESTING FACT ABOUT THE BAND?

Not really sure if readers would be interested in this at all. The entire band is pretty much a big bunch of awkward dorks who just really really love music and making music together. We’re the type who would go to gigs and kind of stay in some quiet corner listening to bands. Individually I guess, we could say briefly that: Jackie is into anime (REALLY INTO IT), Bert is a guitar master, Andrew is a music major in UP and he has the best dad jokes among everyone – he’s also part of The Dreamists, Miles is part of Miles and Mot and is originally from Cagayan de Oro, Izzy owns a tea plant.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR RECENT FUND RAISING EVENT AT MOWS?

Our listening party was so much fun!! A bunch of people came and had fun and listened to all our tracks. We were surprised by the sheer amount of people that came. We won’t disclose the certain amount but it’s definitely enough to help us out with our album production costs. So thank you to everyone who went to that event!!

ANY RITUALS WHEN WRITING SONGS?

Usually it starts with a jam session and then if there’s a riff or melody we like, we build it from there. Sometimes it starts with lyrics and the melody. But more often than not, it really starts with a riff. For the lyrics, Jackie usually has a backlog of lines she keeps on the sticky notes program of her laptop. Sometimes she fits them to certain melodies and certain riffs and sometimes she crates brand new lyrics to fit the song.

HOW LONG DID IT TOOK THE BAND TO RECORD THE ALBUM?

Oh gosh. It took us QUITE a while. The actual recordings you’ll be hearing took around 8 months in total but the album has been in the works since 2013. We just had to keep postponing recording sessions and then eventually scrapping everything and starting from scratch. I think that was the hardest part. We’ve been working with two of our closest friends – David Lina and Anton Magno for this album. The drums were recorded at Thirdline Studios where Apo Hiking used to rehearse. Guitars and bass were recorded at home and the vocals were done at Andrew’s dad’s studio over at QC.
