A night not to be filled with tearful farewells, but with hopeful see-you-laters. For the month of July, [Indie] Manila puts the Gig of the Month spotlight on one of the most talked-about acoustic singer-songwriters to date—Clara Benin—and her scheduled end-of-month farewell concert.
We all know Clara Benin as the girl with the guitar making waves in the local independent music scene with her soft, Colbie Caillat-esque vocals. But unlike most born into talented lineage, she worked to make a name for herself rather than ride on the musical laurels of her father, former Side A member Joey Benin.
She spent her undergraduate years at MINT College as a Music Business Management student when her song “Closure” became the hit that jumpstarted her career. She went on to voice McDonald’s Hooray For Today jingle, and collaborate with McCoy Fundales and Isaac Garcia for a musical interpretation of “Kung Akin Ang Langit” for Philpop 2014 where it won the Spinnr People’s Choice Award. On March 2015, she released her self-produced debut album Human Eyes, followed by her EP Riverchild on November of that same year.
Most recently, she launched a music video for Closure online, and performed in Rappler’s Live Jam not long after she announced her indefinite hiatus.
After a full year of musical success, Clara Benin shocks fans and onlookers with an announcement of her first (and last, for the time being) concert that will commence her break from the live music scene. She publishes a note on her website www.clarabeninmusic.com, saying,
“I believe that my entire music career came to be because I dedicated it to honoring God and loving people. There’s a time to work, a time to play, and a time to rest. […] After much deliberation and consultation with my manager, my dad, and some close friends from the music industry, I have decided that the best thing for me to do in this season is to go home and take a break from the live music scene for an indefinite time. By taking a break, I will be able to pursue my other interests, build new dreams, and be able to regenerate.”
Partnering with Stages x Sessions, Clara Benin’s “Coming Home” Farewell Concert will take place at The Teatrino at Greenhills Promenade on July 29, 2016 at 8PM. Tickets are now on sale at TicketWorld outlets nationwide.
