White Wall Poetry is organizing an event to highlight the rap and poetry skills of rapper, lyricist, and poet, Ruby Ibarra, with an event entitled Balikbayan: Ruby Ibarra Live in Manila on December 20, 2017 at B-Side, The Collective in Makati.

It happened once before in 2015 – a free event that showcased a lot of talented rappers and poets as opening acts before Ruby Ibarra spat her poetry and rap songs from her mixtape “Lost in Translation” at the small venue then known as Sev’s Café in Malate. The event was a success as rappers, poets and audience from mainstream, underground, and Fliptop scene came by to witness her. What was intended to be a small gathering was packed with more or less 300 people.

Now, White Wall Poetry wants for Ruby’s fans to have a bigger space, with a well-curated line-up as they bring the Cali-based artist at B-Side. Her newly released EP Circa ’91 went on #29 on iTunes rap/hiphop albums, next to the likes of Macklemore and Kendrick Lamar. Colorlines described Ruby Ibarra’s music as “confessional hip-hop with influences such as Tupac and Lauryn Hill. Ibarra’s intricate lyrics explore her personal struggles and what it means to be Filipina, Brown and a woman in the United States. And Ibarra doesn’t shy away from discussing race.”

White Wall Poetry is proud to present Ruby Ibarra because not only is she a master of her craft, she is an inspiration to most poets and rappers of today’s generation. Her courage to speak her mind about the everyday struggles a Filipino experience in their hustle should serve as an inspiration to all of us.

Joining her on stage on December 20 are some of the artists that performed with her last 2015 – NINNO, Ryke, and White Wall Poets; an addition to the list of poets – Dzeli Del Mundo of Tadhana, Roc-6 of Art Forms Productions, Neil John Luna of Titik Poetry; rappers – Jo Hussle of Death Threat, Apoc; and bands – Tukar Sinati and Mellow Submarine. The event will be hosted by rapper GnarlyDork.

Two cultures – hiphop and spoken word poetry – combined in a night of intense lyricism and punchlines. This is a rare one.
